Alonzo is staying with his rescuers!!!!

Alonzo - Rescue LaPerm, Cary, NC

Coloration: Black and White

Arrival Story:
Alonzo was first spotted on May 23, 2007. Disruptions, related to the many building sites at the location, kept the rescuer from catching him. As he became less afraid of the rescuer, she thought he was a long haired cat which had been given a haircut and fit the description of a missing cat listed by a local family. It took her over a month to confirm that he was not this family's cat. Only when he finally allowed her to touch him, did she realize he was curly and wavy all over his body. (Her daughter found out about LaPerms on The LaPerm Society of Amerca's web site. http://www.lapermecat.com)

Unfortunately, he disappeared again before she could coax him into her carrier. He reappeared a week later, injured - probably from being kicked. Her Vet did not think he would survive the infection in his jaw for the first few days. Then the antibiotics began to work, and after a week, the vet was able to repair the cat's injuries.

He spent a total of ten days in hospital and the Vet, like the rescuer, was charmed by his personality. Unfortunately, he tested FIV positive on the ELISA; that surprised them since his recovery was going so well. They had the Western Blot test performed as confirmation, and it also came back strongly positive. The rescuer has taken him to her home and is keeping him in separate quarters from her other cats. He does not like being so restricted now that he is feeling better - very playful and looking much better, too! He craves attention and human companionship but seems jealous of her other cats. If he can not get along with her cats, she can not keep him.

The local rescue organizations and shelters will not take him because he tests FIV positive. He would be a great pet in a single cat household and, as I am sure you know, has a good chance of living a long and healthy life with good care.

His blood work indicated signs of malnutrition so he was probably lost for some time before May of 2007, probably around six or seven months old since he had not been neutered, and to our surprise did not have a microchip.

The vet thinks he is less than two years old. If we can not actually find out who he is, and who owned him, maybe one of our members knows someone who wants to foster a special needs LaPerm and give him a good home.

Alonzo is now a beautiful, healthy, affectionate cat. We would hate to see him euthanized for lack of a loving home, and it would break the Vet's heart to have to do it after all they have done to try and save him! Also, Alonzo has a fan club of people who have been following his story, and they will never forgive us if we don't find him a home.

We can arrange transportation for him.

Thank you for any help you can offer.
